One of the biggest and longest debates in the medical world is the effectiveness of medical marijuana. Today, we understand cannabis as a herb that is therapeutic. It is an essential medicine for a lot of people suffering from a variety of medical issues. But then there is also the stereotype that it is intoxicating, a gateway drug,  and therefore dangerous.

But, which of these narratives is true?

Reading through the information available online, there are facts and arguments backing each side. All the pros and cons leave the debate ongoing and with a constant question of whether or not cannabis is safe enough to be considered a medical option.

Today, we’ll shed some light on the debate and allow you to make a decision for yourself.

What Are The Benefits of Medical Marijuana?

The supporters of medical cannabis look at it as a medicine. A natural herb that is packed with hundreds of cannabinoids, terpenes, and other chemicals that work together to deliver an array of health benefits.

Medical cannabis can be useful against inflammation, pain, nausea, seizures, depression, anxiety, cancer, and more. These are just the tip of the iceberg. Millions of people across the globe use cannabis medically as a treatment for their medical conditions. Chronic pain and anxiety and the two most common reasons why people use cannabis in the United States. The cannabinoids have the ability to alter the perception of pain, reduce inflammation and calm the body and mind to reduce pain and anxiety.

Looking at the effectiveness of medical cannabis in improving health problems, several US states went along a different route than the federal government and decided to legalize it. As of July 2021, 38 US states have legalized medical marijuana and 19 US have legalized recreational cannabis. The legalization of medical cannabis in some states opened doors for people who could not find a solution to their health problem in pharmaceuticals.

People also prefer medical cannabis because it gives them the advantage of choosing from different delivery methods. So, instead of just popping pills, you can consume it as edibles, flowers, tinctures, and more.

Can Research Back It Up?

Honestly, there’s not much research on the medical use of cannabis available on the internet. But the positive impact of cannabis can be proved to some extent based on the research that exists.

First, let’s talk about the endocannabinoid system. The effectiveness of cannabis found a concrete answer with the discovery of the endocannabinoids and CB receptors. After the discovery of anandamide in 1992 and CB1 and CB2 receptors in 1988 and 1993, it paved the way in understanding the way cannabinoids found in cannabis work in the body.

The therapeutic benefits of cannabinoids can today be explained as the activation of CB1 and CB2 receptors in the brain and all over the body by THC and other cannabinoids. It impacts the brain and other important body functions which helps deal with inflammation, pain management, anxiety, lack of sleep, lack of appetite, and more.

Additionally, studies suggest that CBD does not directly react with the CB receptors but plays a crucial role in reducing the degradation of anandamide which helps improve mood, reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.

Besides the health benefits, cannabis proves to be a more preferred option than opioids. The US is dealing with the opioid crisis and it calls for a way to reduce the dependence on opioids. Cannabis is often seen as a better alternative with equal, if not more, effectiveness, lower risk of abuse and fatality.

Drawbacks of Cannabis

One of the biggest drawbacks of medical cannabis is that it is not federally legal. Even today, cannabis and its derivatives are considered a Schedule 1 Drug and not accepted as a medicine. Due to the illegal status of the herb, it’s not easy to conduct detailed clinical research on it.

Besides the illegal status, the non-supporters of cannabis also bring forward the absence of FDA regulation on the herb. All cannabis products in the market are not overlooked by the FDA so the consumers have no standard to look up to. Also, there’s no proof of the quality of the product. However, some ethical brands tie-up with third-party laboratories to make sure that all products are safe for use and meet the quality claims on the labels.

The drawback of medical cannabis can also be seen in terms of side effects on the body. First, it is intoxicating. So, you can expect impaired alertness which is risky. Also, with regular use, consumers can experience cottonmouth, increased appetite, and red eyes. In severe cases of overdose, the side effects can rise in intensity and the consumer can experience fatigue, nausea, confusion, paranoia, and anxiety. But it is important to understand that the effects of cannabis on the body can depend on various factors. So, whether or not you will feel side effects cannot have black and white answer.

Is it The Right Option For You?

Now, cannabis is indeed psychoactive and intoxicating. But it is used to the advantage of the consumer with proper microdosing. Likewise, all the other side effects can be managed with proper professional guidance.

And if you are worried about the fact that medical cannabis is federally illegal, stop worrying. This is why we have a Florida medical marijuana card. Since some states have legalized medical cannabis, doctors cannot prescribe but legally recommend cannabis to patients who need it. The card gives you legal security and several other exclusive benefits.

With the major pros and cons laid out in front of you, the decision of whether medical cannabis is for you or not is a decision you need to make. If you think you can benefit from it, you can apply for a quick evaluation online. The doctor will examine your medical condition and determine if you qualify or not. Upon approval, you can use your medical card to buy medical cannabis and use it.
